Sexism remains an incredibly complex and prevalent problem in America and all over the world. Despite the fact that people claim that it has been solved due to suffrage and the women's liberation movement, there are still rampant wage inequalities and instances of sexual assault and harassment present in American society. I believe that more awareness must be made of sexism in American society, and that not enough is being done to address the horrific problems that women face even today. In my Toulmin essay, I wish to argue that sexism remains a substantial presence in American society because of continued imbalances in social and economic treatment of women as compared to men; I will also argue that legislation and education efforts must be made to help deal with these inequalities.
My research plan is to use peer-reviewed sources, trusted statistics from reliable organizations and works from databases including Ebscohost and JSTOR in order to support my arguments. I wish to research sexual abuse statistics, wage rates between men and woman, and the rate of sexual harassment in both the workplace and the armed forces. Search terms include 'wage inequalities,' gender inequalities,' 'sexual harassment,' 'rape culture,' 'gender-based discrimination' and more; with this direction, multiple secure and peer-reviewed sources will be collected to form my arguments and provide evidence supporting my claim. With the help of these sources, I will have proper, legitimate scholarly and organizational support to back up my claim that women continue to be discriminated against in American society, and that something needs to be done about it.
