In the modern American society, there are quiet a number of issues that need to be considered and looked at in detail as they draw quite a debate. One of such issues is the issue to do with abortion. According to Gallup (Para 1), abortion is the act of purposefully terminating pregnancy, at whichever stage due to unnatural circumstances. Being a major issue in the society, there ha s been debates around it as to whether it should be made legal under all circumstances, legal under all circumstances, or whether it should be made legal in some circumstances and illegal in others. This essay seeks to determine how this issue should be handled. The essay will take the position that abortion should only be allowed under certain conditions, when it is inevitable.
There are other arguments about abortion that seem to be rational. These are as explained by Gardner (Par 5). In the first instance, it can happen that a woman conceives under the worn circumstances. For instance, a child can be conceived through a socially unacceptable manner, such as rape. Under such circumstances, the argument is that the women should be allowed to go on with the abortion if she so wishes, since the pregnancy can be a reminder of the tough experience she went through. Another argument is that there are times when the pregnancy is a risk to the mother’s life. Under such circumstances, it should be legal for the woman to go on with the abortion. Lastly, there is the argument that at times, the mother might not be in a position to efficiently provide for the child, such as the case which happens with teen pregnancies. Under these circumstances, the women proponents argue that the women should be allowed to go on with the abortion.
Well, these arguments seem to be very considerate. However, it is worth noting that in most of the cases, there could be better alternatives than committing an abortion. For instance, in cases of teen pregnancies or rape, the woman can always put the baby up for adoption after birth. After all, there are quite a lot of people who would like to have babies but cannot. This would be a batter alternative than to kill the baby.
Anderson (Para 3) argues that going about with abortion amounts to a crime. As such, even if the woman was raped, there is no way that a crime can be justified by another crime. After all, the baby is alive, no matter the circumstances surrounding its conception. Rather than killing it, the best alternative would be to give it a chance in life; by carrying it to term and putting it up for adoption. Generally, the argument is that abortion is ethically and morally wrong, and should not be allowed.
Based on the above argument, it is clear that there are some arguments against as well as arguments for abortion. However, this essay takes the position that abortion should only be allowed in circumstances where the life of the mother is at risk. In all the other circumstances, there is a better way out; adoption. If the woman does not want a baby and wants to have the freedom of choice, she can do that by avoiding getting pregnant. Otherwise, once the conception has taken place, the child deserves a chance at life.
